Jeff & Lauren
Lauren Havens was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1986. Two years later she met Jeff Wren and they married in 1990. Lauren passed away from Multiple Sclerosis in 2001 after battling the disorder for 15 years. It was during her final years that Jeff watched the movie Patch Adams. He was struck by how Patch treated his patients, “You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you’ll win, no matter what the outcome.”
That perspective changed Jeff’s approach to how he cared for Lauren. At the end of the movie is a phone number for the actual Patch Adams, the real-life person for whom the movie is about. Jeff called Patch and it started an 18-year relationship about caring for people and helping the whole world smile. Jeff traveled to Russia with Patch Adams and a team of 25 other individuals in 2014. They journeyed to hospitals, orphanages, and other places where children needed a reason to smile. Jeff, Patch, and their team dressed up in clown costumes and Jeff’s life was never the same again.
Jeff and Lauren’s love of children and their close relationship with Patch Adams inspired Jeff to start Havens Nest in fall 2015. Lauren’s legacy and Jeff’s passion inspire our commitment to sharing life-changing opportunities for children across Denver.
